The Chester Playhouse, a cultural landmark in Chester, Nova Scotia, has recently undergone a significant transformation. This historic venue has been revitalized through a collaborative effort that marries innovation with a deep respect for its rich heritage, with acoustical design provided by A7hz Acoustics.
Since its establishment in 1938 as the Kenerik Movie House, the Chester Playhouse has served as a cornerstone of the community, hosting films, theatre, and live performances. Over the decades, it has evolved under the stewardship of the Chester Theatre Council with support from Sir Christopher Ondaatje. In 2020, a major renovation project commenced, backed by government and community support, aimed at modernizing the facility.
In June 2021, as the renovation was nearing completion, a devastating fire caused significant damage, halting progress and casting doubt on the Playhouse’s future. Nevertheless, the community’s commitment to restoring this cultural asset remained steadfast.

Collaborative Design and Engineering
In 2022, Atelier 7hz was engaged to address the acoustical challenges of the Playhouse. Our objective was to enhance the venue’s sound quality while preserving its architectural integrity. Our contributions to this collaborative effort included:
- Low Background Noise: With a new low-noise HVAC system, and with a particular attention to side doors to prevent external noise intrusion, ensuring a peaceful environment free from disruptive noise.
- Variable Acoustics: The team designed and implemented adjustable acoustic panels to manage reverberation. These panels are repositionable to accommodate different performance types, providing flexibility without the need for complex or costly electronic systems.
- Seamless Integration: Acoustic solutions were integrated with the building’s existing design, addressing challenges such as the Playhouse’s low ceiling height and limited volume, all while preserving its visual identity.
We would like to express our gratitude to Andrew Chandler and Ray Moschuk from the Chester Playhouse Society, Costello Fitt Limited, and Kelly Moore Design for their unwavering dedication and collaboration throughout this renovation.
Looking Ahead
The Chester Playhouse now stands as a testament to resilience and innovation, showcasing wall panels made locally that fit with the community-driven history of the building. With its enhanced acoustics and preserved architectural charm, it is well-positioned to continue its role as a vital cultural resource for Chester. Atelier 7hz is proud to have contributed to this revitalization, ensuring that the Playhouse can be enjoyed by the community for generations to come !
